Improving #biglaw Efficiency

June 03, 2015

BigLaw firms can be notorious for putting many layers of lawyers onto a project. Of course a big project can justify a team of lawyers on it but duplication, overlapping and inefficiency is common. Good process management and workflow efficiency tools can really help. Do read this useful piece by Joseph Tiano.

A well-designed tool can interpret legal spend data and pinpoint, for example, where four timekeepers (e.g., a partner, a mid-level associate, a junior associate and a paralegal) repeatedly participate on an “all-hands” phone call or daily meeting; identify the frequency with which repeated tasks recur and whether the recurrence is delivering real client value; highlight where an attorney is billing for unreasonable travel time; and identify where two timekeepers at the same level with the same skill set are handling the same task within a short period of each other.
