I recently wrote an article for Corporate Counsel regarding how to assess a legal department’s overall level of maturity in each of CLOC’s 12 competencies.

To help law departments determine how they are performing, we have created a free online Maturity Model survey. The survey offers a clear picture of your department’s overall health level, based on industry standards and maturity benchmarks. By taking the survey, you will be able to quickly and easily see if your department is underdeveloped, developing, efficient or best in class.

As you look at your survey results, keep in mind that it’s fine to have slower progress in some categories, if those categories are less relevant to your broader business goals. Likewise, even if you are over-achieving in certain categories, it may not yet be time to celebrate unless those categories are moving the needle for your department.
