Today’s lawyers need so much more than technical expertise

emotional intelligence leadership added value
I am heartened on a daily basis by the growing recognition that other skills outside of technical excellence should be equally prized in lawyers. In-house lawyers in particular need to develop their emotional and conversational intelligence and their leadership skills.
Ground breaking GC, Funke Abimbola, shares with us here some of the attributes that she looks for in her award winning team and the Vision that they work to in supporting Roche. A ‘can do’ attitude is a must.
Technical expertise is essential but the right attitude and approach is also key. I need team members who are pragmatic and commercial in their approach, who have an innovative and creative mind-set and a positive, ‘can do’ attitude. Self-awareness and emotional intelligence are also crucial – without these qualities, it is impossible to build strong working relationships or to develop the interpersonal skills that are essential in any professional career.
