The Risks of AI for Diversity

I was fortunate to speak with Christina Blacklaws (who is a member of our Advisory Board) last week about women in legal tech.

One of the (surprising, to me) points she made was that because machines now learn very quickly, based on vast quantities of historical data, there is a risk that AI could in fact harm diversity in law far more than it could help diversity in law. Her concern was that bias in society might get “hardwired into decision making.”

At Elevate we have been tracking and reporting our diversity in our Equitability and Inclusion Report, which we published this month for 2019. Our legal tech business does not have the same gender diversity as the rest of our business and this is something that we are working hard to address.

“In a computerized world, [diversity] should get better,” she said, but warned “it could get an awful lot worse” if bias in society was “hardwired into decision making”.
