The economic pros and cons of the proposed Investigatory Powers Bill
July 24, 2015
Computer Weekly’s excellent article makes rarely heard points in the somewhat overheated debate on the Bill some refer to as the “Snooper’s Charter”, namely that some businesses are exiting the UK because of concerns that the creation of a security-state would be detrimental to their business. Other businesses, however, are supportive of the Bill. A useful contribution to this debate.
If the Investigatory Powers Bill comes into force, and it does mandate the storage of all communications and require access to encrypted content, then the effects on the economy could be severe. Companies that are likely to be affected are assessing the risk to their businesses, and some have already taken the step of leaving the UK to protect their data.
