When I began my legal career I recall getting a stomach upset a couple of months after getting married and being astonished by the, admittedly rather elderly, partner for whom I was working remarking “Ah ha! Newly wed. Tummy upset? Say no more…….” I left for a better working environment soon afterwards! But that was the 1980s, for goodness sake! I did hope things had changed for the better. These days people certainly know to be more circumspect but, as this report, “Perceptions and impacts of working patterns within the legal profession in Scotland” for the Law Society of Scotland shows, little seems to have changed beneath the surface. In fact I never had children; my perception is that, once I was obviously over child bearing age, that subtle discrimination was no more.
