Positive News on the Careers of Australian Women Lawyers

July 02, 2015

It’s wonderful to read this news from Down Under, especially the helpful moves towards acceptance of agile working by such prestigious and influential firms as Herbert Smith, Norton Rose and Allens.

The Australian Financial Review’s partnership survey figures show women now make up more than 60 per cent of senior associates across the surveyed firms, accompanied by some growth in those working with flexible arrangements, which are likely to become more prevalent. That compares starkly with the 24 per cent of women in partnership ranks, but lawyers are confident the breakthrough will come. “We will see women be equal in numbers as we increasingly focus on gender equality at all points of promotion, eliminate gender bias and create more flexible workplaces using technology,” said Annette Hughes, a partner of Corrs Chambers Westgarth who is also the firm’s diversity council co-chair.
