Do in-house lawyers still feel they’re seen as “second cousin to private practice”?

I was surprised to read this comment reported to have been made at a meeting of the in-house division of The Law Society of England and Wales. Whilst I recall in-housers being seen as rather second class way back in the 1980s, I’ve not experienced this for many years. In fact in a lot of ways in-house work can be more challenging than private practice and is recognised as such. I’d love to know what you think?
Despite accounting for 21% of the legal profession, it appears in-house lawyers still can’t shake off the ‘second cousin to private practice’ perception no matter how hard they try.
One audience member told a meeting of the Law Society’s in-house division last night that ‘if you say you’re an in-house lawyer, some people think you’re not a real lawyer.’
